The LORD’s care when his servant’s work is done

This week we consider one of the most beautiful passages in the Elijah and Elisha story, that of Elijah’s departure to heaven, accompanied by the chariots and horsemen of Israel (2 Kings 2). That is, accompanied by noble and powerful leaders of God’s angel armies. Back in 1 Kings 19, Elijah fell into despair and felt utterly alone, praying that the LORD would take his life. In our text today, the LORD answered that prayer in the most gracious way, in his best time. After gifting Elijah with a new season of fruitful ministry, pulling him out of his despair, it is finally time for Elijah to leave this earth and his ministry. And the LORD gives him the most wonderful honour as he leaves. But this is more than the account of Elijah’s departure. It is also the story of the baton of prophecy passing to another, the establishment of Elisha in his prophetic ministry. And we look further into the future again, to see another young prophet filled with the Spirit, attested by miracles, purifying the hearts of the people. Let us welcome the greatest Elisha, the greatest ‘God Saves’- Jesus.
