Pentecost Sunday – the Word and the Spirit

There are many things that could be said about the Day of Pentecost. This day when the ascended Christ poured the very Spirit of God upon the new people of God. What I would like to focus on this Sunday is the way the Spirit of God brings God’s words to our hearts.

Every human heart longs to hear a word of love and affirmation form parent, spouse and friend. How much more, truth be told, do we long for a word form God our Creator. But tragically, it is impossible to discover God’s words ourselves. Enter the Spirit of God. The Spirit changes everything, bringing to us the mind of the Father in human language, through the words of the Apostles (1 Corinthians 2.10-15). And under the authority of these words, the Spirit may also speak contemporary words of prophecy, for the up-building of the church today (1 Corinthians 12.27-31).

God speaks through his Spirit. Let us savour his words of love.
