“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:3). This enigmatic statement begins a number of remarkable, counter cultural sayings of Jesus, called the beatitudes. Blessing comes to the least likely. We begin this Sunday by digging into the first of them, quoted above. Who are the poor in spirit? What does it mean to possess the kingdom of heaven? In what sense could they be blessed? How could we be numbered among them? These are life-changing sayings that can transform our lives for the good.
